You know what makes me cringe about Hollywood bringing Comic Books and Mangas to life? Someone completely unfamiliar with the content or someone too familiar with it.
Dragon Ball Evolution
Case & point on the former? Dragon Ball Evolution… There was no doubt, James Wong (known for Willard & Final Destination) was out of his depth with the task of bringing Dragon Ball to life. Most of the movie did not resemble the manga or anime. For instance, there were two narratives in Dragon Ball, one when Goku was a child & another when he was an adult. Wong chose neither of the two and decided to present Goku as a teenager. And did you catch Goku’s Kamehameha, lol! What should’ve been a ray of light, turned into an airbending trick. There was no chance for a sequel after that!
Avengers Age of Ultron
Case & Point on the latter? Avengers Age of Ultron… There’s no other director in Hollywood with more street cred on Comics than Joss Wedon, but that’s not always a good thing, especially when someone with so much knowledge of comics is given the job to bring a comic book series like the Avengers to life! With that much knowledge on a subject, you & I would tend to over do it as well. Why? Because we’ve read every issue of every series! This can pose a problem because there’s only so much we can cram into 3 hours max! And that’s what happened with Avenger’s second chapter…
Sometimes there are some surprises like that of Black Panther and Captain America: Winter Soldier. But most of the time, a comic book should remain a comic book.
