In the Vin Diesel Last Witch Hunter movie trailer you see above, Vin Diesel plays Kaulder, the last of a long line of Witch Hunters who hunt and kill witches. 500 years ago, there was a battle that ensued where armies of witch hunters battled against fearsome witches. Kaulder was not only part of the onslaught, he also slayed the most powerful witch of all, but before she died, she cursed Kaulder with immortality, which resulted in him being separated from his wife and child. For five centuries Kaulder hunts down and slays rogue witches hoping for one day to rid the world of them and to reunite with his family! Today, Kaulder is the only one of his kind who comes face to face with a witch who can resurrect the Queen Witch he slayed 500 years earlier… Does this sound like a great story? Well, the trailer certainly doesn’t disappoint!
Vin Diesel has done very well for himself playing Dominic Toretto in the Fast & Furious movies, and as much a fan as I am about the franchise, there’s much to be desired about Vin Diesel. Every other film he’s starred in hasn’t been great. He’s attempted Drama, Comedy, Family, and other action, none of which has garnered him the popularity Fast & Furious has provided. My theory is that he can’t carry the movie alone, which is why there are so many other actors playing in the film. The moment you take Diesel from that group, horse power (sort of speak) goes from that of a super powered charger to (to be fair) a Chevy Camaro. Does it look nice? Sure… Does it have what it takes to see the race through on its own and win? No… Case & Point, The Pacifier, Find Me Guilty, Babylon A.D., A Man Apart, and Riddick Series (Pitch Black, Chronicles of Riddick, & Riddick)… The one movie that came close to the success of Fast & Furious, was 2002’s XXX, where Diesel played the part of extreme sports junkie, Xandar Cage. Other Than Samuel L Jackson who now stars in Marvel’s Avengers & Avengers: Age of Ultron, the cast fulfilled their part to make the movie as high-octane as possible. In addition to Marton Csokas and Asia Argento, the film made sure to include all-star extreme cameos like Tony Hawk, Mat Hoffman, & Carey Hart who helped shape the theme, which was extreme sports.
What can Elijah Wood bring to the Fantasy/Supernatural table? Well, he did star as Frodo in the Lord of the Ring Trilogy! Will he be able to help his co-star with making The Last Witch Hunter a success? Not sure… Will he do the opposite and hurt its chances of it becoming a franchise? Not sure either.
I am a BIG fan of the Fast & Furious franchise… I’m also a BIG fan of Fantasy not to mention Supernatural reads and flicks… What I’m not too sure of is Vin Diesel & Elijah Wood working together to try and pull off what so many in Hollywood have tried in the past, which is to pull a blockbuster out of this genre… Let’s face facts, these films are fun and exciting to watch! You have the hero or anti-hero, the villain, the monstrously impossible plan to defeat the villain, and the happy ending. But, what I’ve seen so much of is “The Either Or”… We EITHER have a great story, but not such great actors, OR great actors & horrible story. In the end, no matter what, we’re faced with more win/lose scenarios: Great Actors/Bad Story – Great Story/Bad Actors. Will Vin Diesel Last Witch Hunter be the exception? Will it become the franchise the studio hopes it will be? The trailer seems to be leaning towards that, but like other trailers we’ve seen before, it might be showing us the best parts of the film. If my hypothesis is right, and what Vin Diesel needs is a great supporting cast to make a successful franchise, I’m hoping that this one’s it, but at the end of the day, we’ll need to wait and see for ourselves. Personally, I’m rooting for it!
