As I scour the Internet for news, threads and forums concerning the DCU and Black Adam, the common denominator that I’ve found wrapped in a question is, “will Black Adam save the DCU from itself?” Aside from the fact that Black Adam is by far one of my favorite all-time (misunderstood) comic book villains, if two (heck four) of the greatest comic book superheroes couldn’t save the DCU, what makes people or for that matter Warner Bros think Black Adam will?
Let’s talk about what the live action movie has going for it as of right now, and that’s Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock… You’re talkin about a guy who puts all of himself into his work while staying grounded, which is unheard of in a town like Hollywood where everything walking resembles plastic. There is no doubt in my mind Johnson will be able to pull this off; however, it will require a little less of that WWE enthusiasm he brings to not only his rolls, but the ring. Black Adam is like that big dog on the street who knows he’s big and doesn’t have to act out in any way, shape or form. There’s an adage that goes a little something like, “More knows the devil for being old than from being the devil”, this says everything you’ll ever need to know about Black Adam, because it’s all about his history. You couple that with Johnson’s work ethic, and you got a pretty damn good Black Adam on your hands.
But even with all of that, there needs to be a great supporting cast; Black Adam and Dwayne Johnson cannot carry the entire film because the story behind Black Adam’s life is much more epic than even Black Adam himself and as such, the cast needs not only to support the story but execute it flawlessly, you feel me? Christopher Nolan’s trilogy was as good as you could possibly want to get and the finale was flawless, leaving room for Dick Grayson to be Nightwing then bring Batman back as Frank Miller did with The Dark Knight Returns… There were a number of directions Warner Bros could have taken, but they decided on the awful Batman vs Superman starring Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot, followed by an even worse Justice League! The only good that was crapped out of that was Wonder Woman and Aquaman, and even then they still couldn’t save the DCU.
Here’s what I think… A). As owners of DC, Warner Bros needs to separate themselves completely from creative. That said… B). Make DC it’s own entertainment entity or studio! C). Hire the DC version of Kevin Feige, someone like Geoff Johns and let him get to work on rebuilding the DC Universe brand in spectacular fashion. One final note on the subject… Jeph Loeb is NOT Geoff Johns, so don’t get it confused. Hire Geoff Johns!
