When our older generations and most of us still in school, specifically in Social Studies class think of Poland, it’s mostly with regards to World War II, Communism, Pierogi & Potatoes. For us gamers; however, we think of CD Projekt’s The Witcher & their upcoming Cyberpunk 2077!

From this moment on, we’re going to stick with the latter in order to focus on how the gaming industry in Poland has caught all our attention as it pertains to video games! Let’s get something out of the way first… Poland’s largest known company throughout the world is major oil refiner and petrol retailer, PK Orlen, valued at about 36 billion zlotys. CD Projekt, maker of The Witcher and upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 is already valued at 27 billion zlotys. What does that say about the gaming industry in Poland? It’s quickly growing into a huge sector already beating out the old…

CD Projekt is not the only player in town (pardon the pun). In fact there are a few other gaming companies, namely 11 Bit Studios, PlayWay and Ten Square Games that collectively (including CD Projekt) are valued over 30 billion zlotys!

Although Poland is Eastern Europe’s biggest economy, it’s important to know overall it has been very difficult (almost impossible) for gaming companies to find or scrounge up any funding locally; so how have companies like CD Projekt raised capital? The stock exchange, more specifically the NewConnect Stock Exchange in Warsaw where small companies are allowed to float shares.

However, after CD Projekt’s success sfter The Witcher and now their upcoming Cyberpunk 2077, more & more angel investors are looking into getting a piece of Poland’s $664 million gaming market! In fact, it has already been slated to reach over $800 million in the next 4 years…

Over half of Poland’s population recognize themselves as gamers, but where did all this start? Sort of like Hip Hop being the start of becoming an avenue to say something or reach fame & fortune, video games have brought in the same opportunities with channels like YouTube, Twitch & Mixer. Unlike here in the United States, Poland’s gamers had to trade or swap pirated games. Some may say the start of games in Poland was similar to the start of Hip Hop in the US – it all started in the streets & basements and went into the hands of fans via mixtapes. Now, much like Hip Hop, the gaming market has flourished in a multi-billion dollar industry. Pretty soon, we’ll be seeing a whole lot more of what the gaming industry in Poland will contribute to the world of gaming as a whole.
