Deja Thoris of John Carter didn’t only appear in the Disney movie, “John Carter”, Deja’s been around for quite some time beginning with the books written by Edgar Rice Burroughs. The first book was John Carter of Mars published in 1912, that’s right 1912!! But that’s not what we’re focusing on today… We’re focusing on Deja Thoris, who eventually becomes John Carter’s wife and the mother of his children. On the subject of Deja Thoris, we will be focusing on comic books she appears in, more specifically the Deja Thoris Series created by Dan Abnett and Vasco Georgiev.

About Deja Thoris

Before we dive head first into the Deja Thoris Series, let’s talk a little about Deja Thoris… Yes, some of us have read the comics & books depicting her, talking about her and comics (not to mention) all eleven (11) books she has appeared in; however, there are those who haven’t, so be patient… Deja Thoris, princess of Helium is the daughter of Heru (Queen of Helium) and Hath (King of Helium), and Helium is one of four kingdoms on Mars… Greater & Lesser Helium are comprised of over ten million people. If you’ve seen the Disney movie (John Carter), then you’ll most likely recall the name Barsoom, which translates to Mars. There’s also Thark, which is a Martian tribe of green four-armed Martians lead by Tars Tarkus. There was only one movie, which is either a coincidence or done on purpose as the last book is entitled “John Carter of Mars”, which leads us to believe there was only one movie (period); however, I digress… Deja Thoris in the movie is exactly who she is in the books as well as in the comics, “an intelligent strong-willed woman able to defend herself in a moment’s notice”.

Deja Thoris of Mars

With regards to Deja Thoris comic books, Deja Thoris first appeared in 1995’s Tarzan Sunday comic strip, which syndicated in national newspapers throughout the United States. It wasn’t until 2010’s Warlord of Mars, published by Dynamite Entertainment that Deja Thoris had an ongoing role, but even then, she wasn’t introduced until issue 4, but starred in thirty three other issues!

The success of Warlord of Mars brings us to the six-issue series focusing on Deja Thoris as Queen of Helium… The series focuses on Deja Thoris solving the mystery of her missing father. In the process of finding her father, Deja discovers a secret that causes her to leave Helium altogether to begin her adventure throughout Barsoom (Mars).

Deja Thoris #1

This brings us to Deja Thoris #1, which is set to release in December of 2019… Dan Abnett, who is the writer of the upcaming comic book focused on Deja Thoris, has been quoted as saying that he is HUGE fan of all the Edgar Rice Buirroughs books and that he jumped at the opportunity to write about Deja Thoris. What sets this series apart from the 2010/11 series is that Deja Thoris will be appearing alongside the women of Vampirella and Red Sonja. So to say that this series is different from the previous version is an exciting understatement!

I for one look really forward to picking up my copy at my local comic book shop or Comixology… We here at Geek Swaggah will update you with release dates as they become available!
