A question that has been floating around since The Walking Dead began 10 years ago could possibly be answered, “could aliens be the cause of the zombie apocalypse on The Walking Dead?
Could Robert Kirkman have answered this question on Twitter:
Now, you’re probably looking at this and wondering, “What the hell is space spore?” and here’s what he means by this… When Kirkman and Tony Moore pitched The Walking Dead all those years ago, it was said that they pitched it as if it were a part of the 1960s classic, “Night of the Living Dead”. If you recall in the flick, a scientist in the film tries to convince people that the cause was radiation from a space probe that exploded in Earth’s atmosphere. That was said to be the pitch!
Now, for those who have read the comics, remember issue #75?
According to Michonne, an alien race caused the dead to come back to life… Remember that?
Throughout the show; however, there was never any mention of how the pandemic started and the closest we ever came was during season 1 episode TS-19 inside the CDC, when Jenner whispers in Rick’s ear, and even then nothing comes of it.
At Comic Con 2017, Kirkman said that the show is not about scientists or people trying to solve what caused the dead to walk the Earth. In fact he went on to say that if this had happened in real life, he was willing to bet no one in Hall H would bother finding what caused the apocalypse. He went on to say, “the show would be too boring”. He’s probably right!
So what are your thoughts on what caused the apocalypse? Was it Aliens like the 1960s movie suggested or was it the government/lab like 1985’s The Return of the Living Dead?
